I think understanding the power of myth, of embracing the interpretations we create that help explain the
underlying structure of our universe is an essential step every civilization must embark on. All civilizations from
every time frame must develop their own customized collection of “myths” to better reflect contemporary issues.
Civilizations also change over time. Their “myths” much subsequently change to better reflect contemporary
concerns. If we do not embrace the power of mythology in our lives we lose an important part of what makes us
human. We can not escape the power of mythology in our lives. If we deny the fact that we all are deeply
affected by the power of mythology the underlying power of mythology will inject itself into our lives anyway, and
often in unexpected and occasionally adverse ways. If we allow that to happen we become vulnerable to the
possibility that the “myths” we refuse to recognize as such will be reinterpreted as fundamental fact.
Unrecognised mythology can then transform into dogma. Unrecognised mythologies no longer serve us. We end
up serving the whims of the very mythologies we refuse to to take responsibility for having created in the first
place. It’s best to be a co-participant in the making of our own mythologies. It’s is also a good idea to
occasionally revise them to better reflect contemporary concerns.
